how many watt portable generator dose it take to run a 5000 btu ac unit?
It all depends on the Amperage it draws on start-up. I had a 750W gen that would not start an 6000BTU unit, but it was close. So, I’m guessing a 1K would run one, but it would be operating at such a high percentage of it’s rated power, if anything else turned on, it might kick off. So, I’d go higher. Ask the Air Conditioner dealer what they would recommend, then talk to the sales people at the generator dealer.
