heating air conditioning contractor
Researching central Air and heating units?

After 17 it looks like our air condition unit is at its end. I would like to do some research on air condition units heat pump combos. Most of what I have searched so far is more Brand driven and does not give me a good idea which units are more reliable. We have a 1700 squarefoot house in Jersey.
Which brand/unit give me the best value for the price?
What prices to expect?
What to look out for etc.?
Who to buy them from?
Is a large store like Sears better than a smaller contractor?

Thanks
Got first estimate from gas company:
Bryant is the only brand they offer
Recommendation sear 14 unit air condition
355 Furnace
40 gallon water heater

total cost with installation and Nj tax $9600.
minus Rebates $400 Gas,$550 Bryant (till end of June) $150 electric company and $1500 tax credit
After rebate and tax credit cost is $7000

There is a lot of quality other then just Carrier and Trane. Trane and Carrier you are paying for the name. Lennox, American Standard, York, United Refrigeration, Coleman, Comfort-Aire, even Dayton make quality products. You want to look into a high efficiency unit. It is worth the extra money. If you already have a heat pump then you need to replace it with a heat pump. Unless you plan on changing the air handler as well.
For me personally I am not a fan of heat pumps north of the Mason Dixon line. On the other hand you do have some tempered winters in New Jersey so it might be beneficial in your case. Heat pumps lose the efficiency cost when outside air temps drop below 32 degrees.
