What is the purpose of a 12 pulse assembly on a Variable Frequency Drive?
This is one way of reducing harmonics generated back to the supply system from a drive compared to standard 6 pulse. Usually only for large drives as small drives don’t generate as much harmonics.
Modern drives are now starting use AFE (Active front End). Other ways are by using filters.
There are also 18 or 24 pulse drives but these, along with the 12 pulse, are much more expensive than the standard 6 pulse and more often used where harmonics is a big concern such as water companies that connect to domestic power supplies with large VFD’s.
